Bringing me on in the middle of a series or duet, and need me to catch up with what is going on in your story? Authors have the option of selecting a reading service for already published/completed novels to prepare me for your editing service with your current project!
Writing on topics that either you don't have first hand experience with or want to make sure it is being portrayed accurately? English Proper will pair you with one of our sensitivity readers who are qualified in the area(s) of your book to make sure this reads as it should be represented, or give recommendations on how to address this!
Alpha readers go through an early or first draft of a manuscript, offering constructive feedback on character development, plot direction, story pace, general comments, and logistics. While there are no direct changes or edits that are made to the manuscript, these comments are logged followed by an emailed summary sheet for the author's consideration.
Got your summary sheet back, completed your edits, and want another read through to make sure those changes read well now logistically? You can book a second alpha reading over the same book, a V2 for the same rate with 15% off, once you finish making changes based off your first summary sheet. This doesn't include reader reactions like your first appointment, where instead you will only get logistical comments with the goal of answering the question: Does this read well now?
Beta reading, compared to alpha reading, is done post edits, and is an analysis from the reader's perspective. At English Proper, regardless of how you define these two terms, you can book a Beta Reading at any point of your personal book process to give reader feedback before publishing! Note that alpha/beta readings are different scopes of service than proofreading. This service will not include comments/edits on grammar or sentence structure.
Line editing includes analyzing the manuscript line-by-line to look for inconsistencies in syntax, tone, and emotion. Line editing considers elements such as is this an overused phrase, would the character use this type of language, does the book flow for the reader? The key element in this service is making sure the manuscript flows. Manuscripts are edited through tracked changes, or through "accept" or "reject" editing functions.
Copy editing is a close review and edit of the manuscript in its final draft stage. All discrepancies will be noted, including format, flow, and, most importantly, grammar. Manuscripts are edited through tracked changes or through "accept" or "reject" editing functions. Remember, this is your passion project and you get to have the final say!
For the authors who want to do line and copy editing with the same editor at a discounted rate, this service is for you. This includes a manuscript submission where line editing and copy editing are completed in a single appointment. This discounted service is valued at $.018, but offered at $.012!
Proofreading is the final revision of the manuscript, checking to make sure there are no stray grammatical or formatting errors. This is the finishing touch to a manuscript before publishing.
The Editor’s Package is two separate appointments! Your first appointment is a combined editing appointment (line and copy editing) for $.012 per word (valued at $.018 if booked separately). Your second appointment is a proofreading appointment at $.005 per word with 10% off!
