Hello, lovely! My name is Hannah, welcome to English Proper Editing Services! I have the privilege of teaching English and Communication to undergraduates all around the country while I am completing my Ph.D. in Communication. Reading and writing have been a passion of mine from a young age that flourished after entering higher education. Not only have I continued with personal projects and academic publishings, but I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of authors one-on-one to help enhance their writing and tell their stories. I have a unique skill set of being classically trained in academic writing and editing, while my personal reading brings me familiarity and navigation through a multitude of fictional genres. Alpha Reading

Alpha readers go through an early or first draft of a manuscript, offering constructive feedback on character development, plot direction, story pace, general comments, and a first impression from a reader's standpoint. While there are no direct changes or edits that are made to the manuscript, these comments are logged followed by an emailed summary sheet for the author's consideration. This is the only "developmental editing" that English Proper offers.
Line Editing
$.011 per word
Line editing includes analyzing the manuscript line-by-line to look for inconsistencies in syntax, tone, and emotion. Line editing considers elements such as is this an overused phrase, would the character use this type of language, does the book flow for the reader? The key element in this service is making sure the manuscript flows. Manuscripts are edited through tracked changes, or through "accept" or "reject" editing functions.
Copy Editing
$.007 per word
Copy editing is a close review and edit of the manuscript in its final draft stage. All discrepancies will be noted, including format, flow, and, most importantly, grammar. Manuscripts are edited through tracked changes or through "accept" or "reject" editing functions. Remember, this is your passion project and you get to have the final say!
Combined Editing
$.012 per word
For the authors who want a one-stop-shop, combined editing is the service for you. This includes a manuscript submission where line editing and copy editing are completed in a single appointment.
Proofreading
$.005 per word
Proofreading is the final revision of the manuscript, checking to make sure there are no stray grammatical or formatting errors. This is the finishing touch to a manuscript before publishing.
Editor's Package
$.016 per word
Offered by popular demand! I am excited to present the Editor's package, which includes a combined editing appointment (line and copy editing) for $.012 per word, and an additional proofreading reading appointment at a discounted rate, $.004 per word. The Editor's package is only eligible for authors who book a combined editing service first, to then add the discounted proofreading appointment with the final word count after the combined editing appointment and author's read through.
English Proper believes every author should have access to professional editing and offers interest-free payment plans.

Once we reach your scheduling block, authors need to go through their onboarding. This is three steps; email me your manuscript, sign the contract, and pay your deposit. Authors complete onboarding every time they book an editing service.

After your onboarding, I get to work on your manuscript! Time tables differ based on the length of the manuscript and the type of service selected.

V1 is your "Version 1" drop. This drop is made when the editing service has been completed and the manuscript is emailed back to you.

Once you have your V1 drop, you will then go through and "accept" or "reject" changes in the manuscript based on your preferences. Remember, you get the final say!

After the author read-through, you have the option of requesting a "Version 2" or V2 drop. This is when you can send back the manuscript with specific questions or comments that need additional feedback. Authors have such a talent for creating stories and immersive experiences for readers. An editor comes in to ensure your manuscript reaches its fullest potential. Every author needs a second pair of eyes - this is what brings books to the next level. This can be the make or break your book succeeding post-publication.
English Proper's proofreaders are skilled independent contractors with specialization in different genres to account for the variety of English Proper's authors. They are trained with Hannah and contracted with an NDA, ensuring the use of VPNs, Word documents, no AI interventions, and all the legal requirements that Hannah signs with each and every service contract. They are "silent" contractors, as they do not receive author information, communication, or personal information, ensuring authors' safety.
All genres. My author clientele is currently revolved around dark romance, paranormal, contemporary, fantasy, small-town, sports, western, MC, and action. If you are a dark romance author, I work with extensive trigger warning lists.
Editing services including line editing, copy editing, and proofreading, start with an editor read through. I work through Microsoft Word tracked changes for "suggestive edits" that authors can "accept" or "reject". This is critical for keeping author voice and ensuring that all final changes fall in line with the author's vision. Once completed, the V1 is sent to the author for their read through and V2, if applicable.
The goal of the V2 is to ensure that authors are satisfied with the final product of their service and to encourage open communication between parties. Especially for new authors, when I am learning your preference and style. If authors see a consistent editing style that they don't prefer and want exchanged for something else, have a question, or need feedback on an open comment that I left, this is where authors would highlight sections of the manuscript that need additional attention, emailing this back for a V2.
I work with authors at all manuscript stages, even conceptualization! It all depends on where you are with the manuscript itself. Have a first draft but you are still playing around with the plot? Alpha Reading. Have the story's direction down but it needs to flow? Line Editing. Ready to make sure your grammar is in order? Copy Editing. Want to save money in the editing process? Combined Editing. Need finishing touches before you publish? Proofreading.

You need a completed first draft before you can claim your promotion. Since it is a promotion, the only onboarding is the contract signature. No payment is required.
Sample edits are very important when searching for an editor who is a good fit! The sample edit allows you to see my editing style, often in a combined editing status (line and copy editing), but can also be used as a tool for my personal recommendation of what service best fits the current draft. Sample edits include two chapters and can be emailed to info.englishproperediting@gmail.com. No contract signing or payment required.
Nope! Doesn't matter if we have been chatting for two days or two years, you can redeem your promotion whenever your first draft is completed.
Manuscripts are quoted per service, per word. There are no packages with English Proper, because I believe in only paying for the work that is completed, compared to a scale or category of word count. When looking at a manuscript, especially if you completed a sample edit if you are a first time client, I can recommend the service I think best suites the draft at the current stage. Clients, of course, have the choice with this. For example, I could recommend that a draft needs both line and copy editing, but an author may only want to do a copy edit, which is fine! The only contingency comes with proofreading. If the editing work required actually calls for a copy edit, a proofreading cannot be completed as this would not be accurate work and compensation.
Onboarding is required for all services, whether this is your first project with me or your tenth! The first step is to email me your manuscript at info.englishproperediting@gmail.com. Next, this will be attached to your contract which is sent via DocuSign. All authors must provide their legal name for contract signing, which is kept confidential, of course. After contract signing, if applicable, is your deposit. All payments are completed through PayPal.
Within any business venture, contracts are essential for the safety and protection of all parties. For English Proper, this is to ensure that there is clear understanding with the scope, process, payment, and completion of a project, especially when dealing with unpublished manuscripts. Authors are welcome to request a copy of the contract for review before beginning the onboarding process.
All payments are invoiced through PayPal business. English Proper is dedicated to making professional editing accessible to all authors. There are a variety of payment plans available that are offered and outlined in the contract, from paying the full amount upfront to monthly, interest-free payment plans.
No, you can have an unlimited amount of ongoing payment plans with different projects. You do not need to complete one payment plan before starting another with a new project. The only contingency to this is that all invoices must be paid by their deadline.
